Objective
The student will be able to identify (by visual examination and with microscope) different types of leather and skin. The student will know different leather manufacturing processes and different tanning methods. The student knows the history of use and manufacturing of leather. The student is able to use different traditional leather techniques.
The student will be able to identify different deterioration mechanisms of leather. The student will be able to make the conservation of leather artefact or leather upholstery taking into consideration the specific requirements of leather as material and the requirements caused by historic manufacturing processes. The student knows materials applicable in for leather conservation.
Content
Different leather materials, manufacture of leather and skin, tanning methods, leather working tools, cutting and paring, stiches and decoration methods.
Deterioration of leather. Impact of manufacturing methods and environmental factors on leather and its deterioration. Possibilities of reshaping of deformed leather, consolidation and repair techniques and materials of leather. Cleaning methods. Dying and finishing of leather. Conservation of gilded leather, conservation of fur.

Approved passing of the course demands that the student fulfills the requirements specified in each course implementation.
