Objective

The objective is for students to understand the significance of microbiological knowledge to osteopathic practice and be capable of applying their aseptic knowledge based on microbiology in various work-related situations. Students command the functions of the antimicrobial defence mechanisms of the body.

Content

Functions of the antimicrobial defence mechanisms of the body. Hand hygiene and routes of transmission occurring in osteopathic practice. Creating a microbiologically safe treatment environment for clients. Basic knowledge of the groups of microbes found on the skin and mucous membranes. The body’s normal flora and its significance. Effects of antimicrobial medication on the body. Microbial diseases causing visible changes in the skin and diseases of immunological origin.
