Descriptions

Osteopathy as a profession

Osteopaths are specialists in clinical examination and manual treatment of the human musculoskeletal system and its functions. Osteopaths key professional competence covers detailed knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and different pathological processes of the musculoskeletal system.

Osteopaths command basic knowledge and techniques of osteopathy, as well as more advanced techniques, such as visceral and cranial osteopathy. This competence is based on studies in anatomy, physiology and pathology focusing on the viscera and cranium.

Osteopaths mainly use manual clinical examinations, which include biomechanical examination and assessment of patients. They use clinical tests to examine the nervous system in relation to musculoskeletal functions. A thorough command of clinical examination methods and advanced palpation skills enable specific osteopathic diagnoses and safe, high-quality care.

Osteopaths treat patients of all ages suffering from functional musculoskeletal diseases. Osteopaths usually work as private practitioners, co-operating with other health care professionals.

Rationale of the Degree Programme

Osteopathy is based on manual diagnostics and therapy that has been developed for more than a century. In Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences osteopathy has been taught only nine years. Osteopathy degree Programme is young, dynamic and constantly developing. The curriculum follows Finnish and international guidelines for the training of Osteopaths.

Objectives of education

The education aims to develop osteopathic treatment and diagnostic skills and enable continuous professional development. The objective is for students to internalise the general ethical view on treatment within health care and be aware of key legislation relating to health care practice.
Another objective is for students to be capable of constructive co-operation with other health care professionals and of developing their own professional field at work.

The education aims to provide thorough knowledge of the functions of the human body and, in particular, the musculoskeletal system and to develop good palpation skills. The objective is for students to learn different examination procedures to examine and diagnose functional musculoskeletal disorders and be aware of relevant differential diagnostics.

The objective is for students to be able to examine patients reliably and to use diverse manual techniques safely when treating patients. They should understand the individual as a psychosomatic whole and have good communication skills.
