Rationale of the Degree Programme in Emergency Care
Students on the Degree Programme in Emergency Care complete the Polytechnic Degree in Health Care and Social Services (Bachelor of Health Care and Social Services). Those graduating from the Degree Programme receive two degree titles: Paramedic (Emergency Care) and Nurse. Those who have completed the degree possess both professional competence needed for independent acute nursing care and that required of nurses in nursing care. Graduates are licensed to practise a health care profession by registering as nurses.
Emergency Care Paramedics function as experts in emergency care within the health care sector and they possess capabilities to work in nursing care within emergency care services that are more extensive than basic skills in emergency care. The task of Emergency Care Paramedics is to influence the promotion and maintenance of the population's health through implementing, developing and evaluating service activities in emergency care with the aid of research information.
Description of the Emergency Care Paramedic's profession
The basic task of Emergency Care Paramedics is to guarantee treatment for acutely ill or disabled patients of different ages at the scene, during transportation and in hospital. This requires Emergency Care Paramedics to have the ability to assess the status of individual patients holistically. Emergency Care Paramedics must be capable of supporting and guiding patients and their close friends and relatives and of co-operating with representatives of other occupational groups. In addition to independent decision-making and situational sensitivity, the work of Emergency Care Paramedics requires good social, cognitive and psychomotor capabilities, which become pronounced in rapidly changing and psychosocially challenging interactive situations. Emergency Care Paramedics must possess the physical capacity required in their work and good learning capabilities. Emergency Care Paramedics may function in different medical, guidance, planning, development, project and expert assignments in emergency care work within emergency care services both in Finland and abroad. Emergency Care Paramedics may either be self-employed or they may work for private or public health care and social services.
