Objective
Students are able to justify the significance of clinical histology, cytology and molecular pathology tests to diagnosing diseases and monitoring treatment and the significance of autopsies to determining cause of death. Students familiarise themselves with clinical pathology information systems and their use. Students command the quality system and principles of occupational safety in clinical pathology. Students know how to perform basic histology and cytology tests independently and identify key cell findings.
Content
Histology: sampling techniques, processing tissue samples into diagnostic preparations, rapid section techniques, basic staining techniques and the most common diagnostic stains, principles of immunohistochemical stains and staining and principles and implementation of molecular pathology research methods
Cytology: sampling techniques; cytological preparation techniques; basic staining techniques; identification of key cell findings in cervical smears, lower respiratory tract samples and urine cytology specimens
Autopsy activities: significance, principles and techniques of medical and forensic autopsies
Operational principles of work within a pathology department: legislation, occupational health and safety, quality assurance and knowledge of information technology in a pathology laboratory
Multidisciplinary co-operation
