Objective

The student will be able to analyse in detail the hygrothermal performance of building envelope components subject to variable thermal conditions and moisture loads. She/he will be able to use physical computer simulations in the mechanical design of energy-efficient buildings with high levels of comfort and durability.

Content

Steady state and transient performance of structures. Air leaks in building envelopes. Heat storage and transfer in 2D and 3D. Thermal bridges. Numerical calculation of thermal transmittances. Transfer of water vapour and liquid water in building materials. Estimation of the risk for moul growth. Ventilated air gaps.
