Timber and Masonry StructuresLaajuus (4 ECTS)

Course unit code: TXB0AA37

General information

Credits
4 ECTS

Objective

After completing the course the student is able to define the stresses in a timber cross-section consisting of multiple materials, calculate the deflection of a beam consisting of multiple materials with varying creep properties, perform the ULS and SLS design of a glued I-section and a tapered beam, perform the fire design of a timber structure and perform the vibration check for timber floor according to the Finnish National Annex of EN 1995-1-1. In addition, the student is able to consider the effects in capacity of mechanically formed members induced by deformation in the joints and design structures using wood based building boards. The student will also be to define the loads in masonry floors, walls and beams, as well as reinforcement of masonry structures.

Content

Course contents are fire design of timber structures, design of glued thin-webbed beams and mechanically formed members, vibration design of floors, design of tapered beams and lateral stability of timber buildings. Also, loading principles for masonry structures, masonry joints, lintels and foundations.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to define the forces and moments of a structure from tables, perform fire design of a timber beam, define the cross-section values of a glued timber cross-section and explain the principles of vibration restriction of a timber floor. Masonry structural principles are understood.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to define the forces and moments of a structure, perform the fire design of a timber structure with or without fire proofing, perform a simplified vibration check of a timber floor and perform SLS and ULS design of a tapered beam to comply with EN 1995-1-1

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition, the student is able to perform fire design of a timber structure considering the changes in the structural model during a fire, analyse the behavior of a tapered beam, perform a vibration check of a timber floor, perform the structural design of a mechanically formed beam. Also, competency for design of new and renovated masonry structures is possible.
