Osaamistavoitteet

After completing the course the student understands how the data transmission quality and data rate depend on channel characteristics. He/she knows the most important physical layer transmission methods and understands why different methods are used in different conditions. He/she is able to estimate the data rate achieved in certain conditions and which method is the most suitable for a certain application. With the help of this course the student is able to understand physical layer specifications of modern systems.

Digital continuous wave modulation methods and their performance
Optimum selection of transmission methods considering channel characteristics
Noise and errors in digital transmission

Arviointikriteerit, tyydyttävä (1)

- Can derive himself/herself a basic transform from time domain to frequency domain
- Based on the knowledge above, understands the dependence between time and frequency domains and thus bandwidth requirement for a certain data rate.

Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3)

- Can compare different transmission methods in terms of their requirements for the communication channel
- Can specify a suitable transmission method when the bit rate and bandwidth are given

Arviointikriteerit, kiitettävä (5)

- Can calculate the bit error rate on given conditions
- Knows the requirements and principles for design of a digital data receiver
