Osaamistavoitteet

The student has a basic understanding of modern physics in terms of discrete energy levels of atoms and the emission and absorption of photons.

The student understands the properties of semiconductors and the behaviour of diode-circuits.

The student knows what a laser is and how it works.

The student understands the physical principles behind the optical fibre. The student understands the concepts of mode, dispersion and attenuation in optical fibres and the mechanisms that lead to these.

Sisältö

Basics of modern physics. Quanta and energy levels.

Semiconductors, their structure and their properties. The role of doping, the pn-junction and the behaviour of simple diode circuits.

Lasers. Discrete energy levels, absorption, spontaneous and stimulated emission, population inversion, losses, pumping and the role of the cavity.

Optical fibres. Ray optics, modes, dispersion and attenuation.

After completion of the course the student has a basic knowledge of the behaviour and properties of diodes, lasers and optical fibres

The student can solve numerical problems relating to quantities characterizing the properties of an optical fibre.
