Objective

The student is able to apply a user-centered design process in software development. The student is familiar with factors that influence user experience and usability. The student is able to evaluate the usability, performance and ease of learning of different kinds of user interfaces.

The student acquires an ability to design and implement ergonomic, user-friendly web applications taking into account human-centered design principles and accessibility requirements.

Content

User-centered design process and design patterns. Application of the UCD in a software project.
Usability evaluation and testing based on user-centered design principles. Introduction to the ergonomics of computer user interfaces, accessibility, the fundamentals of responsive design principles, and user experience. Introduction to human information processing

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

User-centered design methods
- knows user-centered design principles
- is able to make expert evaluations of mobile applications and web sites
- is able to create prototypes and use them in an application
- knows design patterns for responsive applications.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Understands basics of human cognition and is able to apply this knowledge to system evaluation and user experience design. Understands the difference between usability and accessibility. Is able to make usability studies and user testing in application design.
The student is able to apply design patterns and design responsive sites.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to apply user test results in describing work flows and make improvements to user interfaces and user interaction. The students applies user experience design in responsive or mobile design. The student is able to select appropriate methods for usability studies and perform tests. The student masters the user-centered design process.
