Inorganic and Analytical ChemistryLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Course unit code: TG00AB13

General information

Credits
5 ECTS

Objective

After completion of the course the student is familiar with properties of elements, common inorganic compounds as well as inorganic and analytical chemistry applications. He is familiar with equilibrium calculations (acid-base, solubility product) and is also able to calculate the pH for aqueous solutions of weak acids/bases and buffer solutions. The student understands basics of qualitative and quantitative analysis, experimental error, use of standards and calibration. The course gives and introduction to spectroscopy and chromatography. After completion of this course the student has a good knowledge of chemistry calculations used in qualitative and quantitative analysis.

The student will also learn basics of good laboratory practice i.e. correct and safe use of analytical chemistry equipment and instruments. Student understands the risk involved in handling of chemicals and working in a laboratory and is able to adapt safety measures, working practice and personal protection accordingly. Student will learn to use common laboratory devices and equipment in quantitative analysis. Important part of the practical laboratory work is learning to use laboratory notebook, safe working according to given instructions, scientific data analysis and reporting of results.
