Osaamistavoitteet
The student knows the chemical properties of biomass (lignocellulose, starch, triglycerides, algae, terpenes, rubber), their abundance, growth rates and conversion of these into liquid transportation fuels. Basic knowledge of engineering, economic and environmental issues related to liquid biofuel production. The focus of the course is on the physico/chemical processing of biomass to obtain liquid fuels, properties of the raw materials and liquid biofuels.

Biomass chemistry, biomass monomer production (pretreatment, hydrogenation, hydrolysis), heterogenous catalysis, syn-gas chemistry (methanol synthesis, alkane production by Fischer-Tropsch), bio-oils, hydrodeoxygenation, sugar conversion into fuels (ethanol production, zeolite upgrading, aqueous-phase processing, supercritical reforming), conversion of nonsugar monomers derived from lignocellulose. Triglyceride conversion: transesterification, pyrolysis, hydrotreating, microemulsions and cosolvent vegetable oil blends, glycerol utilization.The economics and environmental aspects of biofuel production as well as related legislation. Future prospects, standards, use of biofuels in vehicles and engines.
