Course unit code: TG00AB15

General information

Credits
4 ECTS

Objective

This course provides an introduction to modern organic chemistry. After the course the student understands structure and bonding of organic molecules and is able to identify and name common organic molecules. In addition, the student knows the most common organic reaction types and mechanisms, recognizes different functional groups and understands their effect on the reactivity of the compound. Basic knowledge about the most common analytical techniques, used in organic chemistry, is provided during the course. During the practical laboratory work the students learns in practice some organic chemistry synthesis and characterization techniques.

Content

Identification of organic compounds: nomenclature and different formulae. The orbital hybridization and bonding in organic compounds. Isomerism and optical activity. The most important reaction types and mechanism. Acid and base catalysis. Introduction of plastics, biomeolecules and biopolymers. Examples of industrially important organic reactions. Theory of most common analytical techniques used organic chemistry, e.g. UV, IR, MS, NMR. The basics of organic synthesis and characterization (GC, HPLC, IR, melting point) are learned in practice in the laboratory.
