Objective
The student understands the role of mathematics in engineering problems and natural sciences. The student understands the idea of fitting linear models and the method of least squares. The student understands the idea of vectors and vector spaces and recognizes problems in which they can be applied. The student understands how mathematical software can ease engineering problem solving.
The student masters basic algebraic skills. The student can solve typical equations and systems of equations arising in engineering problems. The student can fit linear models to measurement data. The student can apply vector projections, straight lines and hypeplanes.
Content
Simplifying mathematical expressions and solving typical equations in engineering sciences. Applications of exponential and logarithmic functions in chemistry and biology . Solving systems of linear equations and elementary matrix algebra. Applications of systems of equations in environmental engineering, physics and chemistry. Over-determined systems and the method of least squares.
Basic knowledge of mathematical software.
