General information

Credits
5 ECTS

Objective

After the course the student recognizes typical distributed energy systems. The main focus will be in wind, solar and fuel cells, system backup and energy storage.
After the course student recognizes different energy distribution and storage possibilities to different scale applications and utilities.

Content

1. Wind characteristics and resources. Aerodynamics of wind turbines. Wind turbine classification and design. Wind turbine siting and system design. Wind energy system economics.
2. Solar radiation spectrum and characteristics. Operation of a photovoltaic cell (pn-junction electrostatics). Operation principles of solar heat collectors. Modern and future cell and collector types and their applications.
3. Wind and solar systems as a part of aggregated and distributed energy systems. Future prospects of wind and solar technology
4. Energy distribution for different energy utilities. On-grid, off-grid and smart grid concepts.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

After the course student knows basic working principles of solar and wind energy equipment and system.
Student recognizes different energy distribution and storage possibilities to different scale applications and utilities.
Student recognizes relevant ways to store and distribute energy

Assessment criteria, good (3)

After this course the student knows basic working principles of the solar and wind energy equipment and system so that student can do a project plan and design draft for simple distributed energy system that includes wind and solar production

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student can apply and combine theory and applications systematically and have a holistic approach on areas of wind and solar energy as part of a selected energy system.
