Objective

After the course student recognizes basic principles of waste management and is able to do simple waste plans for municipal solid waste (MSW).

Content

Introduction to solid waste management: waste quantity and quality, generation of waste per capita and region, composition of waste, small scale industry waste, organic agricultural waste (some specific cases as examples).
Waste Collection & Transport.
Treatment/disposal technologies: dumping, sanitary landfills, mechanical-biological treatment, anaerobic digestion, composting, energy recovery.
Financial, social and institutional aspects: costs of collection, separation, management; equipment costs, social costs, stake holders, scavengers, public health issues, policy and legislation.

Student can design simple management chain for MSW.

Student can design efficient and sustainable management chain based on statistical/given date for MSW.
