Water management and sustainable development and climate changeLaajuus (5 ECTS)
Course unit code: TX00BR92
General information
- Credits
- 5 ECTS
Objective
The aim of the course is to provide a broad understanding of climate change on as well as sustainability of water management. After the course the student understand principles of sustainable water management including surface and groundwater resources. Learn about the topics; cliamte change monitoring and its effects on hydrologic cycle and its components, distribution of earth’s water resources, distribution of fresh water on earth, rainfall distribution and intensity. The student knows problems of low flows, storm flooding and their mitigation using reservoirs; uncertainties in water resources management.
Content
Climate change influence on surface and groundwater resources, concepts for planning water resources, hydrologic cycle, irrigation, climate change and sustainable systems, dams, extrem weather condition for management of water resources, drought and flood management. Knowledge on water retention and flow in soils, hydropower, and agricultural use as well as basic knowlegde about dams.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
To define or describe the subject matter related to the concepts and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the associated basic quantitative comparisons and calculations
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student is able to apply, calculate, change and choose the concepts related to the matter and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the basic quantitative calculations as well as to complete and produce the necessary information for the calculations.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The students is able to categorize, collect, combine and generalize the concepts related to the matter and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the basic quantitative calculations as well as derive and rearrange given basic information.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
To define or describe the subject matter related to the concepts and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the associated basic quantitative comparisons and calculations
