Development

The International Degree Programmes latest curricula (2009) process was started in October/November 2008 when we had our first proper team development meeting in Korpilampi, Espoo. It was strongly linked to one of our Double Degree partners (University of Lincoln) withdrawing from partnership which meant we had to re-think our double degree model (back then we had three partners and three different double degree models). It was seen as an opportunity to re-think our EM and EBA curricula as well. Both EBA/EM curricula dated back to Mercuria Business School (2003) so they had seen two mergers and were in dire need of updating.
The decision was to change the structure of the Euorpean Busness Administration (EBA) / European Management (EM) programmes. In the new model students would study during the first two years in Metropolia; their third year of study would be spent at one of our partner schools; they would complete their work placement during the autumn of their fourth year of studies and during the final semester in Metropolia they would write their Bachelor’s Thesis and finalize their courses. The number of credits per course was changed so that all courses would be either 3 ECTS or 5 ECTS courses; this was done to facilitate curricular mapping with our European double degree partner schools. The new model was first introduced to our existing double degree partners and it was accepted by them (by University of Wolverhampton right away and by INHOLLAND after several negotiations). In early 2009 we were ready to start our curricula process and even though the International Business and Logistics curriculum had been developed only one year earlier the decision was made to change its structure to be more compatible with the EBA/EM curricula. The content and courses did not change drastically, only some minor adjustments had to be made to the number of credits (ECTS) and a few new courses had to be added.
Every member of our international programmes team participated in developing the new 2009 curricula. We also used feedback from our students and alumni (who turned out to be excellent resources with helpful ideas and new points of views), from colleagues from other Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland (Haaga-Helia, RAMK, HAMK and LAMK) as well as from colleagues from foreign universities (in addition to our double degree partners). We sent draft versions of the curricula to several companies as well and did receive some feedback, albeit minimal, from some of them, too.
A draft version of the International Degree Programmes curricula was presented to Metropolia’s Advisory Board in February 2009. Interest was expressed about double degree programmes in general, however the new curricula matters sparked very little discussion. The following Advisory Board meeting took place in the autumn of 2009 and by that time the new curricula were already in place. Brochures were provided to all participating members. Board members did not provide feedback on the curricula at that point in time either. Advisory Board meetings have been held twice annually since then, however the International Degree Programmes’ curricula have not been discussed. The tacit understanding has been that the proposed changes were reported and, in the absence of feedback, thereby accepted.
