Objective

The course follows on from the Autumn semester course (FOM 1). FOM 1 offered an evolutionary insight into management from its early origins. FOM 2 will seek to develop management understanding further by building on the basic knowledge building blocks gained from the first semester.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Identify the significant origins and implications relating to contemporary management.
- Develop a critical insight with reference to modern management practice.
- Have the ability to understand management problems and the confidence to offer possible solutions.

- Foundations of Management – a theoretical review
- What are the main challenges facing management today?
- Employee Empowerment
- The importance of Leadership
- The growing significance of Organisational Culture
- The development of team working (theory and practice)
- The role of self managed teams
- Employee attitudes and motivation and the related management implications
- The Employee/Management relationship

Qualifications

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Sufficient performance: showing just enough understanding of the subject to merit a pass grade but requiring greater effort to achieve a more satisfactory result

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good performance: showing strong understanding of basic concepts and good grasp of techniques, but with certain minor problems still requiring further attention

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent performance: not only fulfils all standard requirements but demonstrates originality and imagination
