Objective

By the end of the module the student will be able to:
* understand the means by which market access rules are enforced
* understand the effect of regional legislation on international trade
* describe the legal structure of international trade
* compare the different approaches and objectives of different trading systems
* identify the main market access rules of different trading systems
* apply the principles of international contract law
* apply the principles of international commercial law - sale of goods
* identify the mechanism for dispute settlement
* identify the various company structures involved in cross-border trade

Content

Market access for businesses under the rules of the World Trade Organisation and the ancillary Regional Trade Organisations will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on the obligation and enforcement of the main market access rules of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994.
The course will continue to discuss the main legal principles governing cross-border business practices focusing on contracts, commercial law, company structures and dispute settlement.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent performance: not only fulfils all standard requirements but demonstrates originality and imagination
