Electrical and Automation Engineering: Electric Power Engineering

Code: TXJ21S2

Degree:
Bachelor of Engineering

Degree title:
Bachelor of Engineering, BEng

Credits:
240 ects

Duration:
4 years (240 cr)

Start semester:
Autumn 2021

Descriptions

The learner’s track curriculum in Electrical Engineering and Automation Technology consists mainly of 15 ECTS study modules, which are all organized within one study period of 10 weeks. The study modules are the following:
• compulsory studies of the first year (four courses) 60 ECTS
• second year compulsory studies of the major (four study modules) 60 ECTS
• two elective study modules of the major 30 ECTS
• two totally elective study modules 30 ECTS
• innovation project and the studies of the second national language 15 ECTS
• two internship periods 30 ECTS
• bachelor thesis 15 ECTS
ALTOGETHER 240 ECTS
The studies of the first year of study are compulsory and common to all the students in the degree programme. The major (specialization) is selected at the end of the first year of study. There is four options: automation technology, electronics and electrical power engineering. The studies of the second year of study are compulsory and common to all the students within the major.
During the last two years of study the students have to complete two elective study modules of the major and two totally elective study modules, the innovation project and one course of their second national language. The students have to complete as well two internship periods of 10 weeks and finally carry out a bachelor thesis on a topic related to their major.
The learner’s track of the students selecting electronics as their major is merged to the learner’s track of the students studying in the Degree Programme in Electronics (tuition in English) and therefore their studies in electronics after the first year of study will be in English. Alternatively those students may select all (or some) of their study modules related to medical engineering (in Finnish).
The students may relatively freely plan the timing of their studies of the third and fourth year based on the timing of the elective modules etc. The innovation project and the possible course of the second national language are usually completed during the third year of study. The internship periods may be carried out during the study periods of the third or fourth year or alternatively during the summer periods between the semesters.

Study modules include English language and communication studies. After completing the degree, student has acquired such oral and written English skills that are necessary for practicing their profession and for further professional development (Decree 1129/2014, §7).

Description

Electrical Power Engineering students can specialize in power distribution, electrical installation and lighting technologies or electrical drives. Different combinations are also possible. Electricity transmission and distribution technology focus on the delivery of the electric energy from power plants to customers. Electric energy supply, which development is a constant challenge, is vital for the basic service of society. Smart grids, increasing electric vehicle fleet infrastructure needs and developing e-markets offer interesting prospects for future electrical engineers. Electrical installation and lighting technologies include building electrical design and installations, real estate information technology systems, as well as indoor and outdoor lighting. New energy-saving technologies, such as LED lighting, the development of building automation and the new possibilities of the new intelligent technologies will bring interesting opportunities for current and future engineers. Lighting is an important element in interior design, which requires also artistic skills. Electric drives focus on electrical energy change into mechanical energy. In addition to electrical motor it’s increasingly connected to frequency converter technology, which enables to adjust the rotation speed and other characteristics precisely and energy efficiently. Finnish frequency converter technology has been top class of the world for decades. Electrical engineer work may be related to the design, research and development tasks, expert tasks, consulting, electrical contracting, operation and maintenance, technical sales and purchasing functions. Through experience it is possible to reach in various leadership positions. In Finland Electric Power engineers can work, for example, in the energy and the electricity grid companies, domestic and international industrial companies, contracting companies, engineering and consulting firms, as well as import companies.
