Descriptions
The Master's Degree Programme in Business Development expands and deepens the business competences needed in demanding expert, development and/or managerial positions. Upon graduation, the student shows evidence of being capable of analyzing global business environment and his/her own business sector, as well as one's ability to plan and implement demanding change projects in business life or other organizations, with sufficient research approach and according to sustainable development principles. S/he is able to act as an innovative change agent and in superior positions in a responsible manner.
The Master’s Degree Programme in Business Development consists of
- Development and Management Studies, 30 ECTS
* Development Competence, 10 ECTS
* Transforming Business Environment, 10 ECTS
* Change Management, 10 ECTS
- Special Themes in Business Management, 15 ECTS (from selection)
- Elective studies 15 ECTS
- Master’s Thesis 30 ECTS
Development and Management Studies, 30 ECTS, are advanced professional studies. The studies increase the student's analytical and methodological competencies, the student’s abilities to recognize and anticipate changes in business environments as well as her/his abilities to respond to these changes in different business environments. The student expands her/his leadership and managerial skills with the offered knowledge, insights and tools.
Special Themes in Business Management improves the student’s organizational and business skills from various viewpoints (e.g. law, methodology, business intelligence and/or quality management) according to the student’s personal career needs. The Elective Studies are chosen from an extensive offering of Master level studies, both in Finnish and in English.
The Master's Thesis is a development task, carried out as a project in the student's workplace or other partner organization. Its progress is reported in seminars and supervision meetings throughout the study period. The maturity test is the last assignment of the Master's Thesis process.
The degree programme is carried out as part-time studies and it is intended to be completed alongside work. The learning sessions are organized mainly during two weeknights, either as contact sessions or online, or as combination of both. The duration of the studies is 2 years alongside work. Optionality, combined with an intensive thesis work also allows full-time study aiming for earlier graduation.
Development
The curriculum of the Master’s Degree Programme in Business Development has been renewed. The content of existing courses is updated, new courses added and the overall structure is modular. The student feedback for the programme has been good or excellent. The content of the programme has been evaluated as matching the worklife needs.
The curriculum reflects the strategic choices of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and Metropolia Business School, e.g. in relation to systemic thinking, complexity and digital disruption. The international aspect remains strong, and diversity skills are included in all Master’s Programmes in Metropolia. Work-based learning remains at the core of the Master’s Thesis research strategy (action research) in Business Development. This approach has received positive feedback from workplaces, which are the collaboration partners in students’ master’s thesis studies.
