Descriptions

The Degree Programme in Media trains visual communication and digital media experts. The students will develop good basic skills in their specialisation field. The objective is that the students will be able to become independent experts in their field with good cooperation skills. Another objective is that the students achieve eligibility to continue their studies and readiness to maintain and deepen their professionalism in a variety of working and learning environments. The students will learn to integrate theory and practice in different fields of media. They will become equipped to engage in development work by participating in projects and learning by means of a problem-oriented approach. The students will become familiar with the media business and have the ability to work as entrepreneurs.

The degree programme has three lines: 3D Animation and Visualisation, Graphic Design and Digital Media. The specialised studies of these three lines provide the students with an opportunity to learn about content production for different needs and media.

The degree comprises 240 credit points. The studies consist of core studies all have to take, each line’s professional studies, elective studies and a final project. The degree also contains a 30-credit point work placement.

The core studies give students the theoretical foundation to understand their field’s research traditions, operating environment and concepts. The students will understand the key ethics, legal and social principles relevant in their field and how these affect their work as professionals. In order to develop professionally and to continue studies in the field, students must be able to find and analyse information, have a good general education and sufficient foreign-language skills, an understanding of socio-economic connections and business models, and have an understanding of both the domestic and foreign operating environments.

In the professional studies stage, students complete the studies of the line they have chosen, learning abouth the history and development of their field. They will also learn the expression, form, and presentation and narrative methods of their field, and the relevant production processes, work methods and professional techniques. The studies partly take the form of projects which teach the students cooperation skills and project management. At the end of their studies, students can develop new types of content and media concepts and market themselves.

In the final project, the students show their ability to working independently, to solve problems and to do research. The objective of the final project is to carry it out from a labour market perspective, and it may include the production of the actual artistic or practical project, presentation or documentation. The final project always includes a written part, too. The final project may be carried out independently or as group work.

NB! The language of instruction in the Media degree programme is Finnish, but some courses will be taught in English in the spring term for the benefit of exchange students.

Digital Media
Digital media studies approach the design and production of interactive online services from a variety of perspectives. Online technologies, information architecture, social media concepts and services and interactive functions are key elements of the training.

Upon graduation, the students can find employment in various digital environment expert positions relating, among other things, to online service design, production or project management. The actual work may have to do with the technical solutions of online services, development of social media services, planning of interactive functions or digital media concept and structural planning, for example in a design or communication agency, in companies’ communications departments, in IT companies or the advertising business.

3D Animation and Visualisation
3D Animation and Visualisation looks into three-dimensional visualisation, camera and character animation and the modelling of various virtual environments. Students will become fluent in 3D content design, production and product development.

Graduates have found work, for example, as news graphics designers on television, 2D or 3D games graphics designers, makers of architectural visualisations, character animators, compositors and 3D advertising graphic designers. The job may be found in the gaming or entertainment industry, TV and film production, design agencies, advertising industry, study material production or science visualisation and research.

Graphic Design
Graphin design students can specialise in visual design in either traditional printed media or the digital environment. Common professional studies give students a solid foundation into graphic design, after which they complete specialisation studies in the field they have chosen.

Aspects of graphic design in printed media include:
- Design and illustration of publications’ layout
- Corporate image and brand management
- Marketing communication and advertising
- Visualisation of information
- Packaging design

Aspects of graphic design in digital media include:
- WWW publication
- User interfaces and usability
- Animation production
- Interactive multimedia and games
- Motion graphics and special effects

OPETUSSUUNNITELMAN KEHITTÄMINEN

Viestinnän koulutusohjelman opetussuunnitelmatyössä vuodelle 2008 tehtiin merkittäviä uudistuksia. Kolmen aikaisemman organisaation (Evtek, Laurea, Stadia) viestinnän koulutusohjelmat yhdistettiin yhdeksi kokonaisuudeksi.

Syksyllä 2011 aloittavia ryhmiä varten opetussuunnitelmille on tehty laajamittaisempi sisällöllinen uudistus.

Osaamisperustaisuus toteutuu opetussuunnitelmassa.
