Objective

After completing this course:
- Student will identify and understand the importance of ethical considerations in textile wet cleaning.
- Student will know the advantages and disadvantages of various cleaning methods.
- Student will be able to justify the chosen cleaning method.
- Student will be able to assess in advance the possible damages that might occur during the textile cleaning, and she/he will know how to avoid those.
- Student will know different methods for humidification, and she/he will know how to apply them in practice.

Content

- Ethics of cleaning and washing methods in textile conservation.
- Basic cleaning methods in textile conservation.
- Detergents and their properties used in textile conservation.
- Water, pH and use of buffers in wet cleaning.
- Testing of dyes for wet cleaning.
- Wet cleaning and drying of flat and three dimensional textiles.
- Use of suction table in wet cleaning.
- Contact cleaning in wet textile treatments.
- Methods used in humidification of textiles.

Introduction to conservation materials and techniques, Textile materials and fibre identification, Textile techniques, structures and their interaction, Support fabrics and stitches.
