Anatomy and physiology of the visual system 2Laajuus (8 ECTS)

Course unit code: SO00AA37

General information

Credits
8 ECTS

Objective

After completing the study unit, students are able to explain the principles of coordination between eyes and the anatomical foundation, its significance to vision and development in childhood. They can distinguish binocular vision disorders and describe the factors causing them. Students can calculate the required prism correction and spherical glass as well as assess the quality of vision from various distances by means of graphic analysis. They can explain light and the meaning of its nature to the function of vision. Students are able to describe the process of seeing by utilising their knowledge on spatial and temporal factors as well as the function of retinal visual cells. They are familiar with the processing of the sense of vision and pathways in the brain as well as the anatomy of different parts in the brain, which participate in the processing and coordination of eye movements.

Content

Anatomical and physiological foundation and development of binocular vision in childhood, stereo vision, connection and significance of accommodation and convergence, accommodation and vergence disorders, fixation disparation, strabismus and different types of it, psychophysical means of measurement, light and its significance to visual stimulation, receptive fields, processing visual information, eye movements and their coordination at neural level, colour sight and problems related to it, spatial and temporal factors of seeing, contrast sensitivity
