Objective

Understands the factors of indoor environment. Can design an air conditioning system for a simple office building.

Content

1. Factors of indoor environment. Design criteria for air conditioning systems.
2. Calculation of the cooling demand.
3. Air conditioning processes. Dimensioning of cooling coils.
3. Air conditioning systems. Cooling systems.
5. Fans. Heat exchangers. Filters.
6. Air distribution. Mixing and displacement flow. Air terminal devices.
7. Fire safety, hygiene and noise.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Can explain the theoretical grounds of design of air conditioning systems. Can in simple cases calculate the specific fan power, the cooling loads and dimension the cooling coil. Can explain the principles of fire safety, hygiene and noise control. Can, when assisted, design an air conditioning system for a simple office building.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to (1), can calculate cooling loads using manual calculation methods and computer applications. Can select the components of the system using theoretical calculations and computer based tools. Can perform noise calculations and select silensers for the system. Can individually design an air conditioning system for a simple office building.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to (3), can compare different air conditioning solutions and find the optimal one. Can compare different air distribution solutions and find the optimal one.
