Objective

The student will have basic knowledge of OSI/TCP IP layers and the different protocols. He/she has an understanding of how the data communication networks work and what the roles of the various network elements are.

The student is able to configure his/her PC to work with the local area network. He/she also has the basic skills in calculating and designing subnetworks.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Understands layered system models, characteristics of LAN, structured cabling, common equipment used in local area networks and applications. Understands the basics of TCP/IP-protocol and subnetting.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Understands the basics of IP routing, structured cabling and common terminology. Can calculate IP-subnets, define IP-addresses on the workstation and test the usability of an IP connection.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Can design, implement and test a small network segment, and connect a workstation into a local area network.
