Objective

On completion of this course the student will know the special features of newspaper, magazine and book as well as carton and bag manufacturing and differences of their manufacturing processes. The student will have basic knowledge of the graphic industry, which will deepen through excursions to companies and through analyzing their manufacturing processes.

On completion of this course the student can plan the production process for a simple printed product, and communicate with the companies of the printing sector.

- Printing companies (excursions)

- Professions and personnel groups of the printing industry

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

• The student is able to identify the main steps of print production and the principal characteristics in newspaper, magazine and book production
• The student is able to identify some factors contributing to the quality, productivity and costs of print production
• The student is able to draw up a basic specification for a print product
• The student is able to identify some of the most common paper grades and other materials of print products
• The student is able, under direct supervision and guidance, to use the laboratory equipment and complete the lab assignments
• The student knows the role of the printing industry as part of the media sector and is able to identify some SWOT factors

Assessment criteria, good (3)

• The student is able to identify and analyse the main steps of print production and the specific characteristics of newspaper, magazine and book production
• The student is able to identify many factors contributing to the quality, productivity and costs of print production
• The student is able to draw up an advanced specification for a print product
• The student is able to identify many of the most common paper grades and other materials of print products
• The student is able, under some supervision and guidance, to use the laboratory equipment and complete the lab assignments
• The student is able to analyse the role of the printing industry as part of the media sector and is able to identify many SWOT factors

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

• The student is able to analyse and develop the main steps of print production and the specific characteristics of different printed products
• The student is able to identify and analyse the significant factors contributing to the quality, productivity and costs of print production
• The student is able to draw up a complete specification for a print product
• The student is able to identify and compare many of the most common paper grades and other materials of print products
• The student is able with minimal supervision to use the laboratory equipment and complete the lab assignments
• The student is able to analyse the role of the printing industry as part of the media sector and is able to analyse and reflect on many SWOT factors
