Descriptions

Cultural managers are the facilitators of cultural projects, who organize and manage productive operations. They ensure that a cultural event or service is well planned, realistically carried out, it reaches the clients and meets the contextual objectives. Cultural managers graduating from Metropolia work in positions linked to business, productization and organization. The degree program of cultural management is focused on business skills. The aim is to become an expert, who masters the fundamental processes in cultural management and who specializes and thus gains unique expertise.
The curriculum of cultural management consists of 30 credits of themed study modules, which in turn consist of 5 to 10 credits of courses. Hands-on projects strongly linked to cognitive skills are emphasized in the degree program. The topics vary each year. The first year of studies focuses on the cultural project management. The studies will be conjoined together in the autumn by preparing the manual for the productions, which is carried out during the spring semester. The second year extends the acquired knowledge by seeking new cultural production partners. During the third year, the individual skills are strengthened through minor subjects and advanced professional studies. Last year, the students will demonstrate acquired knowledge and integrate it to work life in the form on internship and thesis.
The competence of each cultural manager is built in the following way: the students complete the course related tasks; internships; their own projects; elective studies; advanced professional studies; and the final thesis related to the individually built goal oriented profiles. ***Opiskelijoita tuetaan kansainvälistymiseen opintojaksoihin integroiduilla kieliopinnoilla sekä mahdollisella opiskelijavaihdolla tai kansainvälisellä työharjoittelulla. ***
The starting point of education is the close connection with the world of work. This manifests itself concretely as internships, courses held in collaboration with work life, commissioned final thesis, and as projects and productions commissioned by work life. The core of collaboration, however, is a common interest in development: both the commissioner’s and the institution’s starting points include supporting learning, discovering new solutions, promoting professional growth, and thus developing Helsinki region.

Development

The curriculum has been written together with the teaching staff and work life representatives. The first draft was written by combining the forces of nine teachers working at the degree program during spring and autumn semesters 2013. The core outline of the curriculum was discussed on the meeting of the advisory board on 30 October 2013. Subsequently, the curriculum was further developed and sent to 16 work life representatives to be commented on in January 2014. The advisory council discussed the proposed changes for the curriculum at the meeting held on 20 February 2014. After additions made by the advisory council, the curriculum has been submitted to be approved by the board of directors on 3 March 2014.
