Objective

After completing the course the student knows basic concepts of radio communications and general structures of radio systems. The student understands the construction of cellular network and knows the GSM system architecture, channels, bursts and call connection and knows the evolution phases of the GSM data transmission.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Radio transmission:
-understands radio wave propagation in free space and has skills to calculate power loss in radio path.
Radio systems:
-has knowledge of the constructions and functions of a radio transmitter and receiver and a cellular network
GSM network:
-understands the GSM network architecture and knows the main interfaces inside the network.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Radio transmission:
-understands different fading mechanisms and knows the LOS propagation mode.
Radio systems:
-has knowledge of basic features of the paging systems and cordless telephones.
GSM network:
-knows the functions of the GSM units and the structure of the GSM channeling system.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Radio transmission:
-understands the effects of multipath propagation and rain attenuation on radio wave propagation.
Radio systems:
-knows the functions of the transmitter and receiver units.
GSM network:
-understands the frame system and knows the different bursts and the GSM information security functions
-knows the GPRS and the UMTS system architectures.
