Objective
After completion of the course the student understands the fundamentals of mechanical and electromagnetic oscillations and waves.
The student can analyze oscillations and waves in terms of energy.
The student understands the superposition principle and its role in analyzing a range of topics relating to waves and signals.
The student is familiar with simple AC-circuits and how the quantities describing their behavior relate to each other.
Content
Mechanical and electrical simple harmonic, damped and forced oscillation.
AC-circuits.
Mechanical waves. Sound and the decibel scale.
Electromagnetic waves.
The superpositon principle and the idea of Fourier analysis.
Basics of optics.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student understands the basic quantities and concepts of oscillations and waves and can solve simple standard problems.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student can apply the relevant concepts in analyzing oscillatory and wave behaviour and can solve a range of problems.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student has a clear understanding of the field of oscillations and waves and has mastered the technical aspects of problem solving.
