Objective

The student will know the most common structures and soil conditions and is able to apply them to engineering applications. The student will know the basics of wood, masonry and concrete structural systems, and can apply them to engineering applications. The student will know the soil conditions and is able to apply them to engineering applications

Content

Typical detached wooden dwellings, masonry buildings and concrete element-built multi-storey blocks of flats, their structural solutions and joints, including foundations, wall, floors, roofs and non-bearing elements such as windows, doors, fireplaces and stairs. The student assignment is the drawings for a simple detached two-storey dwelling.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to understand basic structural systems for detached dwellings and multi-storey buildings, and produce a simple set of drawings for a detached dwelling.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the requirements above, the student understands the importance of building control authority, and the joints and materials typical in Finnish dwellings, and is able to use them in simple applications.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the requirements above, the student has a deep understanding about wooden detached dwellings and multi-storey dwellings, and their structural systems and is able to apply them creatively and sensibly in different applications.
