Descriptions

The curriculum strengthens the learner-centredness of UAS education by including optionality and flexibility of studies. It enables rapid response to the changing skills needs of working life and strengthens ecosystem learning in national and international networks.

The studies consist of Metropolia’s common studies and the common studies of social- and health services sector, as well as nursing- and public health nursing degree's own studies. There are 15 ECTS of optional or elective studies. The courses are designed so that students will be able to study an average of 30 ECTS per semester.

Learning is based on situations arising from professional practice, to which evidence-based solutions are sought. A wide range of pedagogical methods are used, including digital learning opportunities.?Competence is deepened and broadened through learning environments that support learning, such as workshops and simulations. Part of the studies take place in Metropolia's welfare and health services for clients, which are produced in multidisciplinary cooperation with teachers and students from different fields. In independent learning environments, students have the opportunity to practise a variety of clinical skills.

Students are responsible for their own learning. During their studies, students are assessed in the following areas of competence: professional knowledge base, professional skills and practice, ethics, cooperation and development. Students will be equipped for continuous competence development and further studies.

The curriculum is in accordance with the degree requirements, the competence and development needs of working life and the demands of national and international cooperation. It emphasises student-centred and learning and competence-based thinking. The learning outcomes tell students what competences are expected of them and help them to assess their own learning. The competence objectives have been defined in cooperation between working life and the UAS, and they describe to employers the student's competence and readiness for different tasks. A competence-based curriculum enables student mobility within and between higher education institutions. It also facilitates the recognition and validation of prior learning (RPL) and the comparison of qualifications obtained in different countries.

Internationality is part of the studies and is made possible through international student exchange, clinical practices or home-based international studies, such as joint studies between degree programmes in English and Finnish or studies in open international online environments.?

The profile of Metropolia's degree programme in public health nursing is that of a broad-based expert in public health nursing. The graduating public health nurses are experts in public health nursing of people of all ages and have strong skills in promotive and preventive health promotion. The focus of studies is on health promotion, preventive work, public health and primary health care. The degree provides the skills to work as a public health nursing professional to promote the health of people planning a family, expecting a child, newborns, children, adolescents, working-age people, the elderly and their families. In addition, the graduate public health nurse will have strong nursing skills.

The degree is a professionally oriented bachelor’s degree (EQF6). Upon graduation, the student receives a UAS degree in both nursing and public health nursing. It meets the criteria set by the Finnish National Framework for Qualifications (FiNQF) for UAS degrees as well as the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) for degrees and other competences. It meets the requirements of the European Union Professional Qualification Directives (2005/36/EC, 2013/55/EU). The qualification provides eligibility to apply for a higher UAS degree or a master's degree at universities and other higher education institutions.

The degree offers a wide range of employment opportunities, for example primary - and, specialized health care and the private healthcare sector. The public nursing degree also provides the opportunity to work in a variety of specialist positions, organisations and international assignments.

Development

Curriculum development for the public nursing degree programme is carried out both regionally and nationally. The competence description of a graduate public health nurse (key competences, objectives and contents) has been produced in a national cooperation between all universities of applied sciences that train nurses: Professional competence requirements for public health nurses 2022. This competence description has been the basis for curriculum development. The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with working life, Metropolia’s public health nursing advisory board, teachers and students.

Further information

The contents on artificial intelligence and information security (0.5 credits in total) are included in the course Higher Education and Career Planning SX00GA99.
The course, developed in cooperation with U!REKA, is integrated in the course Basic Practice Clinical Nursing 2 SX00GB03.
