Objective

After completing the course students will know the factors inducing material failures and has the know-how needed to avoid failures.

Students are able to assess applicability of materials for various service conditions and loadings. They are able to identify the common failure mechanisms and their causes.

Content

The general causes of material failures. The main mechanical failure mechanims, manifestation of failures, factors affecting failures and avoiding of failures. Wear mechanisms and factors affecting wear. Mechanical and environment induced failures of plastics, rubbers and ceramics.

Failure cases, appearance of fracture surfaces with very large (10 000 x) magnifications. Drop impingement erosion.
