3 ECTS

Objective

The student will be able to define the internal stresses in members and understands the correlation with deformations. The student will also be able to define dimensions of simple beams and columns.

Content

Main topics:
- Mechanical properties of materials
- Hooke's law
- Basic assumptions of the theory
- Stress and strain distribution under axial loading
- Deformations: axial, temperature
- Stresses in elastic range in pure bending
- Displacements of simple beams using given formulas
- Euler's buckling formulas for slender columns
- Dimensioning of simple beams and columns

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student can
recognize the tension and compression in a bar
present the principles of deformations and displacements
repeat the deflection of a beam
