Due to the timing of optional and elective courses, credit accumulation per semester / academic year may vary.

Media and Communication

The Media Department includes three degree programs - Film and Television, Live Performance Engineering & Media and Communication - where students follow individual learning paths. The core curriculum for media majors includes courses in academic and learning skills, languages, entrepreneurship and preparation for the final project. Then students follow the learning path of their major, but the structure of the curriculum and the timing of classes enable interdisciplinary courses and projects between them.
The starting point of the learning pathway is professional competencies. The main method is project-based learning, which enables close collaboration with industry partners. In addition to internships, the degrees include several industry-linked projects.
All learning paths include a 10 credit module of elective courses and a 30 credit module of multidisciplinary courses that deepens and/or broadens students’ professional skills. It includes a number of specialization courses and an innovation project.
The elective and alternative courses facilitate the credit transfer of courses completed, for example, in an international student exchange program. Students can do their internships in Finland or abroad, and the language courses are integrated with professional courses in order to support international and multicultural skills.
In their last year of study, students complete an independent industry-related project and write a research report on it. The final project may also include an artistic or practical project, performance or documentation. The project can be carried out by a group of two or more students.

Graphic Design, print media

Graphic Design majors can specialize in graphic design in either print or digital media. Core Courses in Visual Communication provide students with a solid foundation for graphic design studies, after which they specialize in the area of their choice.

Graphic Design in Print Media includes, for example,
- Layout design and illustration of publications
- Corporate image and brand management
- Marketing communications and advertising
- Data Visualization
- Packaging design

Graphic Design in Digital Media involves, for example,
- web publishing
- User interfaces and usability
- Animation production
- Interactive multimedia and games
- Motion graphics and special effects
