Objective

After completing the course, the student
- can communicate independently in basic care situations and is able to manage situations
- can provide information, ask questions, give instructions, and explain their actions, also in some special care situations
- can discuss professional and general topics and justify their views
- can communicate with patients, their families, and the work community in care situations
- understands colloquial expressions
- understands the main points of healthcare documents such as patient records and most common care instructions
- can record patient information and care activities and create a care plan

Content

Strengthening language skills from the perspective of healthcare and nursing
- Everyday verbal and written communication in nursing, e.g.
Discharging patients: care pathways, discharge instructions
Talking with family members
Helping patients move around
- Key grammatical structures needed in routine nursing, e.g.
Partitive plural, review of the conditional
- Expanding vocabulary related to one's own professional field, e.g.
Cardiovascular diseases; common diseases, ECG
Diabetes
Nursing care for children and young people
Mental health and substance abuse care
Musculoskeletal disorders
Medication and non-pharmacological treatment
- Understanding the main points of professional texts and their partial production
Key structures of health care texts
Creating a care plan
- Strengthening language learning strategies
Clear pronunciation
Planning and giving a presentation on a professional topic

Qualifications

Nursing Finnish 2 or equivalent knowledge

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course satisfactorily. They endeavour to cope with interaction situations in healthcare both in writing and orally. They know some of the vocabulary and grammatical structures used in their field. They participate in discussions on basic care situations in Finnish.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course well. They can handle written and oral communication in healthcare situations. They know the key phrases, expressions, and vocabulary used in the field. The student knows the key language structures needed in the field and endeavours to use them in practice. The student actively works on improving their professional language skills. They actively participate in discussions.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course commendably. They engage in interactive situations in their field both orally and in writing. The student uses phrases, expressions, and vocabulary specific to the field in different situations. They use language structures proficiently in both oral and written communication. The student actively develops their professional Finnish language skills in all their activities.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria
Active participation in lessons, completion and timely submission of learning assignments, and participation in the final assessment of the course. The course includes continuous assessment, which means that student participation and activity are important. In learning situations, students' oral and written assignments are assessed. At the end of the course there is a final exam. The course is graded on a scale of 1–5.
