Course unit code: TX00CO57

General information

Credits
15 ECTS

Objective

The student can explain the factors guiding the construction process. The student is able to use the information sources and is familiar with the principles of technical documentation and the required permits. The student can explain the typical space planning and structural solutions and main building materials of a single family house.
The student is able to identify the key structures, HVAC and electrical systems and components in a building, and explain their operating principles and use their symbols and terms (in Finnish, Swedish and English).
The student can draw a plan of a simple building and place the HVAC and electrical components on it using a CAD tool. The student is able to read professional texts and use key vocabulary in English. The student is able to read simple field-related texts in Swedish.

Content

Building design (3 ECTS): Space planning and structural solutions and main building materials of a single family house. The process and parties of a construction project, the duties of the designer and other parties: legislation, regulations and instructions. The building structural elements, constructions and materials, insulation.
CAD (4 ECTS): Construction, HVAC systems and electrical drawings. Major rules governing scaled representation of an object, and computer applications used for modelling. CAD models produced by third parties of a particular planning process. Planes and cross sections according to instructions with the help of models and examples.
HVAC (3 ECTS): Basis of the planning, implementation and operation of HVAC systems in single family houses. Basic air conditioning processes in the h-x plane.
Electrical engineering (3 ECTS): Central concepts of electrical engineering, principles of safe structure and protection of electrical devices. Recognizing the need for a qualified professional for a task. The electrical devices used in residential spaces and the principles of their functional connectivity.
Language and communication skills (2 ECTS): English and Swedish. Basics of communication (name, profession, university, job). Professional terms and information sources. Field related material in English and Swedish.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student can explain the documents guiding the construction and the building permit process. The student is able to search for professional information and to explain the principles of creating design documents.
