Descriptions

The Master´s Degree in Conservation comprises 60 credits. The final thesis
(research and development project) compiles half of the degree. The time required for the study is 1,5 years. Studies are based on multiform learning including contact and distance learning. Various academic assignments will be given throughout the studies. The contact learning will take two days per month during normal working hours. The development and learning assignments are connected with working life R&D challenges.

The studies emphasize multi-professional and international networking. In the Degree Program of Conservation the professional development aspects emphasize working life competence. When starting their studies, students must have at least two years of prior working experience in the field of conservation.

Compulsory seminar work is an essential part of the study programme. The Master´s Degree in Conservation fulfills the qualification requirements for public service, being equivalent to university master’s degrees. The qualification title is Master of Culture and Arts (in Finnish ylempi AMK).

The focal areas of Master’s Degree studies in Conservation are:
- Current scientific research and development in conservation
- Current research and development in museology from the point of view of conservation
- Research of cultural heritage and international networking
- Project management
- Sustainability

Development

The content and guidelines of the Master´s Degree Program in Conservation have been discussed in the advisory committee having members both from Metropolia UAS and the leading museums in Finland.

Objective

The aim of the Master´s Degree in Conservation is to develop and deepen the student´s theoretical knowledge and skills and offer qualification to serve as an expert, leader and initiator of development in conservation. The students will be able to use and apply these qualification and skills in their own work as experts and developers in the field of cultural heritage.

The student understands the significance of conservation both in the national and international context of cultural heritage. The student will gain good skills to follow and analyze the debate and development in conservation and cultural heritage. The student will be able to use the results of the current research and development in these fields for development of her/his own professional expertise and work.
