Objective

After completion of this course the student will understand the fundamentals of parametric 3D modeling. The student will be familiar with the most common operations involved in modeling. The student will understand the parametric modeling workflow and its key characteristics, applied to 3D part design. The student can implement a functional 3D prototype.

Materials

Preferred study environment: Autodesk Fusion 360.
Metropolia students can register Fusion 360 user account with Metropolia account to get the full version of the Fusion 360.
Anyone can register the user account with any email address as a hobbyist for free.
All exercises and the project can be done with the limited hobbyist version.

Teaching methods

This is an online implementation. Lectures and labs are broadcasted in real time and recorded for later viewing. All learning material is published online in course web-page. Online students from our partner universities and open university students are welcome!

It is highly recommended that students attend all sessions for immediate answers to any questions. Timing of the exercises and project deadlines are scheduled such that the course can be completed on extended time period of one study period.

Exam schedules

No exams, assessment is based on the exercises and project.

Completion alternatives

Other parametric 3D modeling tools can be used, but there is absolutely no support. For example FreeCAD can be used, however the current version (0.18) is not yet stable.

Further information

Register as a Autodesk Fusion 360 user, and install the program to your computer before the first session.
If you are using some other parametric 3D modeling tool, install it to your computer before the first session.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Student understands the principles of parametric modeling.
Returned all lab exercises, activity on group work, reports show understanding of fundamental principles of the topic.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Student is able to implement a simple parametric model.
Activity on laboratory sessions, reports show deep understanding of the topic.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student is able to design an elegant parametric model that utilizes carefully selected techniques and unique approaches.
Excellent results, individual project shows novel approaches.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Student understands the principles of parametric modeling.
Returned all lab exercises, activity on group work, reports show understanding of fundamental principles of the topic.

Assessment methods and criteria

Continuous evaluation is applied on this course:
You can get up to 10 points on each exercise, and 20 points on the project.
Evaluation is based on the total points collected from the exercises and project.
Grade 1 = 40% of maximum points
Grade 2 = 60%
Grade 3 = 70%
Grade 4 = 80%
Grade 5 = 90%
