Objective

The students can explain the introductory laws and concepts of thermodynamics and apply them in the calculation of fluid machines and circulation processes. They can explain the properties of moist air and water vapour, and the function principles of heat pumps and turbomachines. They can study the basic processes theoretically.
The student can apply measurement methods and standards to studying the performance of HVACE systems and write a report of the measurements.

Content

Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (8 ECTS): Ideal gas model, laws of thermodynamics, energy balance, internal energy, enthalpy, entropy. Basic concepts of fluid dynamics, pressure losses of pipes ans ducts. Modes of heat transfer, heat balance of a wall. Humid air and water vapour features. Mollier diagram. Refrigerator machine, heat pump. Flow machines (pumps, blowers, compressors, turbines). Cycle processes. Carnot, Otto and Clausius-Rankine cycles.

HVAC measurements (2 ECTS): Measurements of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The students are able to recognize the fundamental concepts and methods associated with the course and are able to solve simple problems. They are able write a measurement report.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to above, the students are able to apply the fundamental concepts and methods associated with the course to simple problems related to course contents.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The students are able to apply the fundamental concepts and methods associated with the course to more demanding problems related to course contents.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The students are able to recognize the fundamental concepts and methods associated with the course and are able to solve simple problems. They are able write a measurement report.
