Objective

Learning outcomes of the course
On the completion of this course the student will:
Familiarize with the concept of nearly zero energy building, energy balance calculations and primary energy.
Acquire extensive knowledge of functioning principles and dimensioning rules of building systems for zero energy buildings. Learn to use calculation and dimensioning tools to support decision making. Improve group work skills and capacity to apply the learnings into a simple project.

Content

The course will cover the following topics:
EPBD directive and nearly zero energy building definitions.
Energy balance calculation and primary energy coefficients.
Heating and ventilation systems for low energy buildings.
Energy efficient generation of heat: heat pumps, condensation boilers, micro CHP units.
Renewable energy systems for buildings: solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, wood burners and stoves.
Hybrid systems and energy boilers, thermal and electrical storage of energy.
Automation for energy efficiency and comfort.
Calculation and dimensioning tools.
Case studies of nearly zero energy buildings.
Students will work in groups, applying their learnings and doing further research to design the energy concept for a nearly zero energy building.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Theory: can explain the principles of nearly zero energy building, and the basic functioning principles of at least some low energy buildings technological solutions. Can perform some dimensioning calculations.
Group assignment: can contribute to the group project and is able to present his own contribution.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Theory: can demonstrate a good, overall understanding of the topics covered in the course and has learned to use the calculation and dimensioning tools.
Group assignment: provides crucial contribution to the group project and a good presentation of the project (oral and written).

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Theory: can demonstrate a deep understanding of the course contents and has acquired very good mastering of the calculation tools.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Theory: can explain the principles of nearly zero energy building, and the basic functioning principles of at least some low energy buildings technological solutions.
Group assignment: can contribute to the group project.

Further information

Student grade will be based 60% on a written exam and 40% on the outcomes of the group assignment. A minimum grade of 1/5 from the exam is required to get the credits for this course, group assignment alone is not sufficient.
