Objective

After completion of this course the student recognizes the adapted biological, chemical and mechanical treatment processes. A student knows the substantial equipment and their optimum application areas. The student understands the most common water treatment processes and is able to solve the calculation related to them. After completion of this course the student is able to select the most efficient purification water treatment process. The student knows the basic calculations and reactions in connection to water.
After completing the course student knows how to plan with suitable design criteria and design water distribution networks as well as sewage collection and storm water drain networks. Student has learned the basic concept as well as selection of critical criteria and working principle used in long term planning of piping networks serving municipal needs.

Content

Biological as well as chemical and mechanical methods in water and waste water treatment. Suspended solids separation from water and waste water. Most common chemical purification methods in municipal and industrial applications. Activated sludge process as part of wastewater treatment. Flocculation, precipitation and flotation. Filtration, adsorption and ion exchange technology as part of water treatment.
The content of the course includes the fundamentals of both industrial and municipal fresh water treatments. This gives the student the understanding of the design process in connection to plant hydraulics, mass balances and process and instrumentation solutions. The treatments stages such as pre-treatment – sedimentation, filtration, and final polishing of the quality of water is made familiar to the student. Also disinfection of water for portable use with alternative methods are highlighted.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

To define or describe the subject matter related to the concepts and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the associated basic quantitative comparisons and calculations.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to apply, calculate, change and choose the concepts related to the matter and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the basic quantitative calculations as well as to complete and produce the necessary information for the calculations.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The students is able to categorize, collect, combine and generalize the concepts related to the matter and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the basic quantitative calculations as well as derive and rearrange given basic information.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

To define or describe the subject matter related to the concepts and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the associated basic quantitative comparisons and calculations.
