Objective

After completion of this course the student will understand how to calibrate a computer aided measurement device. He will understand to separate systematic errors and random errors, correct systematic errors and describe random errors with fundamental statistical methods. He should be able to create a visualisation of rows of measurements. The student is able to calculate the average error of the mean and to calculate error propagations.

Content

1. Introduction
2. Systematic errors and random errors, separation of them
3. Movement and correction of a linear / non linear characteristic
4. Example for calibration of a device and determination of the random error
5. Range and Precision and error propagation
6. Evaluation of series of measurements

Materials

• lecture as pdf or printed out

Teaching methods

Lectures will find place in lecture halls and the lab experiment will find place in a Lab.
All learning material is published online in course web-page.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

- Student understands the principles of calibration
- Student has run the lab experiment with right results
- Student has more the 50% of the points of the written exam

Assessment criteria, good (3)

- Student understands the principles of calibration and pre calibration
- Has run the lab experiment with right results and can calculate the precision of the device.
- Student has more the 70% of the points of the written exam

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

in addition to the previous,
- Student understands the principles of calibration and pre calibration
- Has run the lab experiment with right results and can calculate the precision of the device.
- Student has more the 70% of the points of the written exam

Assessment methods and criteria

The course assessment is based on
