Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be able to calculate stresses under combined loading in frame structures.
The student will be able to compute stresses in thin-walled profiles.
The student will be able to calculate deflections in trusses and frames with an energy method and assess the stresses under impact loads.
The student will be able to choose and calculate a hydrodynamic journal bearing, spur gear drive, planetary gear drive, coupling for rotating shafts, and brake motor.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows how to calculate internal forces and couples in given cross-sections under combined loading.
The student can calculate the stresses in thin-walled members.
The student is able to solve the basic cases correctly.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows how to compute stresses in given cross-sections under combined loading.
The student is able to broadly apply fundamental knowledge.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows how to compute stresses and deflections in critical cross-sections, and is able to assess the capacity of a structure under combined loading.
The student is also able to apply cross-disciplinary knowledge to the assessment of events that cannot be calculated accurately.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed
