Objective

The student will be able to design an automatic machine, both the its mechanical system, and control and electrical system.
The student will be able take into account the special requirements, such as machine safety, present when designing an automatic machine.
The student will be able to carry out a preliminary risk analysis of an automatic machine.
The course will be implemented as a project and it will include the construction and commissioning of the device.

Content

1. Functional description of the device
2. Designing the mechanical system
3. Designing the electric and control system
4. Modelling and simulations of the mechanical parts
5. Applying the control software to a test environment
6. Analysing the safety factors and risk analysis
7. Assembly and testing
8. Documentation

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to model and simulate simple machine parts.
The student can make a simple control program based on the functional description.
The student recognizes the special features of the design process of an automatic machine.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student can model the parts of the equipment and can also create subassemblies to verify their proper function with simulations.
The student is able to write the control software for the equipment and specify the necessary control devices. The student is able to verify the performance of the control software in a test environment.
The student is able to take into account the safety requirements of machine directives in the design process.
The student is able to fulfill the basic documentation needs.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to compare different alternatives for the basic design of the equipment.
The student is able to model all parts and the main assembly. The student is able to apply simulations as a part of the developing process.
The student can write the control program for the whole equipment using modular programming, as well as write the specification for control devices. The student is able to apply a test environment for software development.
The student is able to take the safety requirements of the machine directives into consideration, and to look for different safety solutions.
The student can make the whole documentation of the equipment, and take the results of the risk analysis into account in the design process.
