Objective

On completion of the course, the student will understand the fundamental principles and most common applications of electricity.
The student will be familiar with the fundamental principles of electromagnetic induction and its applications in engineering.
The student will be familiar with the most common types of electric motors, generators and transformers.

1. Basic concepts in electrostatics
2. Magnetic force and magnetic field.
3. Electromagnetic induction.
4. Kirchhoff’s laws and Ohm’s law.
5. Basics of DC and AC circuits.
6. Basics of circuit analysis.
7. Three-phase systems and electric installations.
8. Basics of transmission and distribution networks.
9. Applications of electrical engineering.
10. Basics of electric work safety.
11. Electric safety regulations and standards.
12. Electric machines
13. Transformers

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is familiar with the key concepts of electric current and its behaviour in electric circuits, as well as with some most common applications of them.
The student is aware of the dangers of electricity.
The student is familiar with the basics of power applications of electricity.
The student is able to use the laws of electrostatics and magnetism to describe simple phenomena and to solve simple application problems.
The student knows the basic phenomena and principles of electromagnetic induction, and knows how to solve simple problems related to them.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to apply basic laws of electrostatics, magnetism, and electromagnetic induction in more demanding situations.
The student can analyze simple circuits.
The student understands the basic operating principles of electric machines and transformers, and can perform simple sizing calculations.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student understands the basic concepts of AC circuits and can apply the knowledge to real-life cases.
The student can design simple electric power systems.
