Objective

The student will be familiar with the basic software needed in engineering studies, and know the basics of programming.
The student will be able to use a computer to solve mathematical, physical and technical problems, handle measured data, and be familiar with the basics of modelling and simulation. The student will be able to interpret the results of analyses and write a report of them.
The student will be able to produce reports and other documents applying the tools of technical documentation and the conventions of technical writing and visualisation. The student will be able to use field-specific sources of information and reference them properly.

Content

1. Use of spreadsheet software.
2. Introduction to programming: syntax, variables, programs, subroutines, conditions, loops, testing
3. Use of mathematical software for various purposes
4. Handling of measured data, mathematical modelling
5. Use of word processing software for reporting
6. Visualisation of information and using pictures and tables.
7. Language of technical writing
8. Citations and referencing

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is familiar with the very basics of the software used on the course, and with the basic principles of programming.
The student knows the basic principles of modelling and simulation.
The student is able to draw up an understandable report following the usual conventions of documentation.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student can solve various practical problems using the software studied on the course.
The student is able to draw up a clear and comprehensive report and use references properly.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has a deep understanding about the topics covered on the course and is able to apply them creatively and sensibly in various applications.
The student is able to write a quality report with proper contents, perfected representation and immaculate citation.
