Objective

After the course students have the basic knowledge of quality- and environmental management systems. Students know the principles of environmental legislation at EU and national level. Students are able to search for information in different environmental rules and legislations. Students understand the process of environmental permit procedures and environmental impact assessment. Students are familiarized with the principles of best available techniques in different industry areas, and they also know how to search for information about IPPC.
Students know the importance of waste legislation and they know the main important regulations. Students know the chemical industry hazardous waste legislation as well as registration and notification procedures. Students master the waste management chain from generation of waste till waste treatment, landfill treatment technology, waste composting and anaerobic digestion and is familiar with hazardous waste treatment and waste incineration.
Students know tools and techniques for controlling and preventing solid, liquid and gaseous emissions.

Content

Environmental legislation at EU and national level. Emission monitoring and measurement principles. Process of environmental permit procedures and environmental impact assessment. The principle of the best available technology (BAT) and emission reduction and monitoring practices (IPPC).
Waste legislation, the national waste plan and other waste legislation. Generation of waste, sorting, recycling, landfilling, composting, anaerobic digestion, hazardous waste treatment and waste incineration.
Solid, liquid and gaseous emission prevention methods.

The student shows that he or she is familiar with the basic knowledge and core content of his her own field of study and can search for information in diverse sources.

The student can logically and coherently use concepts and knowledge of his or her own field of study.
The student can search for information as well as evaluate and critically use sources.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student can expertly use the concepts and knowledge of his or her field of technology and justify his or her use of sources. The student can also explain and justify actions and operations on the basis of research data and findings.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student does not sufficiently master or value knowledge of his or her own study field, and he or she lacks sufficient knowledge or ability to use the concepts of his or her study field.
