Objective
On completion of the course, the student will understand
- how an industrial company functions
- how to develop business in his/her own field of engineering and
- what the key success factors for an industrial company are.
The focus is on companies that have a product (physical product and/or service) that is technically demanding and on companies that sell their products to other companies.
The student will be able to describe the following functions of a company:
- leadership and management, including strategy, management system and leadership
- finance, company performance and performance measurement, including productivity and quality
- technical sales of products or services in the business to business context
- operations management
- supply chain management, including sourcing, production and logistics
- project operations
Content

Depending on the background of the student group, the course will contain 1–2 more advanced sessions on some of the following:
o operations management in a product oriented company (including management of operations for physical products, supply chain management and ERP systems)
o operations management in ICT business (including IT systems in a business context, management of IT services, ITIL)
o sales of technology (including solution sales, tendering, negotiation skills, pricing)
o technical purchasing
o technological entrepreneurship (including starting a company and writing a business plan for a technology innovation)
o first-line management
o logistics and the impact of logistics on company performance
o service business focused on technical solutions and services, e.g. IT services and business project processes (including managing services, IT for service management)

The student is able to explain the core concepts related to industrial business.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student is able to explain the core concepts related to industrial business well, and to apply the core concepts when describing the operations of a company in his/her own field.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student is, on top of the previous, able to explain the relationships between the core concepts, and to analyse the relationships in the operations of a company in his/her own field.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student is able to explain the core concepts related to industrial business.
